Living Things in Ecosystem
Different ecosystems are home to different kinds of living things. A forest ecosystem contains many kinds of living things. That's because many kinds of plants and animals can find the things they need to survive there.
Plants and animals are living parts of an ecosystem. These living parts are biotic factors. Biotic factors affect the ecosystem and one another in many ways.
Some living parts of an ecosystems are:
plants animals
trees birds
flowers insects
grasses humans
bacteria
Individual
One plant or animal is an individual.
Ex: One butterfly is an individual. One blue jay is an individual, and I'm an individual.

Population
A group made up of the same kind of individuals in the ecosystem is a population.
Ex: A group of butterflies is a population. So are all the blue jays living in one forest. So are all the people living in one city.

Robins might live in the same forest as the blue jays. Robins are a different kind of bird. That makes them a different population. Some populations can live in mare than one kind of ecosystem, while some populations can live in only one kind of ecosystem.
Community
All the living things in an ecosystem make up a community. Within a community, there are different populations of living things.

The ways in which living things affect each other are called relationships. A predator is an animal that hunts and eats other animals. A prey is an animal that a predator hunts. Relationships between predators and prey are important in ecosystems.
